Cheap Dave's Home Theater

A word about cables

The whole point of Cheap Dave's Home Theater is to create a great theater experience for a reasonable amount of money. I think for any budget (starting about $300) a system can be created that improves the experience of watching movies at home.

So with that being said how much would I spend on cables, speaker wire etc. For me the answer is; as little as possible. I am not a big believer in the Monster Cable or other high end cable philosophy. I actually work with extremely expensive wire in my "Day Job". None of the wire sold as high end cable would make it in my industry. And most of the charateristics that are used as selling points for this wire are even mentioned in my industry.

So for very long runs you might try to go up a size in wire guage. (remember smaller numbers are larger wire). But for most purposes anything larger than a 16 guage wire should be plenty for speaker wire.

What about the inter-connect cables? Beleive me this has become a huge profit center for many retailers and probably even home installers. I almost paid $125 for an HDMI cable. In fact I went to 3 stores and that price was the same at all three. Then I found the same cable, without the high end name, online for $9.99. One thing you should know is this is to transmit a digital signal. Spending $125 for this cable would be like spending $125 for a fancy printer cable. Your documents will look razor sharp.

Ok how about this, wire up you home theater with the cheap wire to start and if in 6 months you think you are missing something then drop $600 for a 6 foot long HDMI cable. Ah that will really make the difference.!!

I know I will probably get flamed for writing this but mainly by people who make lots of money selling cable. (or by people who have spent lots of moeny on cable).

I won't say that there is absolutly no difference, but in the world of home theater on a budget many other things will make more of a differnce for less money.
