Cheap Dave's Home Theater

Building a DVD collection

So we love our home theater and we love to share it with others. We have people over for dinner and a movie about every other week. I don't like to run to the video store every time so I like to have a good DVD collection on hand.

So we love our home theater and we love to share it with others. We have people over for dinner and a movie about every other week. I don't like to run to the video store every time so I like to have a good DVD collection on hand.

A good DVD collection is like a good CD collection with one important exception. I will keep most CDs I buy but I like to constantly weed my DVD garden. I want to give my guests a free hand when choosing a movie to watch so I want to pull movies out that I have seen and do not want to see again.

So my DVD collection needs to be movies I don't mind seeing again any number of times and new movies that I (and hopefully my guests) haven't seen. Plus a few kids movies when I have friends with kids. I also need to keep movies in several categories. I love to show big action movies on my HT but my wife is always in the mood for a good comedy and those are pretty rare. My collection is currently about 250 titles but I am still working on improving the quality without really increasing the size.

There is a place here in town and probably in most towns that buys and sells used DVDs. They do VHS for $2 and DVD for $5. He will give you 2 for one trade. So movies I keep cost me $5 and ones that I watch once only cost me $2.50 which is less than many rental places. I don't have much use for VHS as it really doesn't look that good on my large screen. But this is also a good place to dispose of my VHS tapes and trade them for DVDs.

Net Flix is a good way to always have a few titles on hand that you haven't seen before but it is no that easy to coordinate to have 3 titles that would appeal to your dinner guests at any given time.

Now when you have a home theater you will always be looking for more good movies so I am including on this site reviews of movies that I really like (and some to avoid) that I think my readers may not have seen.

My rating system will tell you whether I think the movie is worth keeping in the collection, buying and trading in, a good Net Flix choice and ones to avoid even on a bet.
