Movie Reivew: The World's Fasted Indian
Rating: Netflix it

The World's Fastest Indian is the story of Burt Munro a 70-something New Zealander obsessed with tinkering with his 1920 Indian Scout motorcycle and attempting to set land-speed records on it. I really enjoyed the movie. It is just a peek into one chapter of his life as he tries to make the trip from down under to Utah to attempt an official timed run at the Bonneville salt flats. The main action happens when he fires up his machine and shocks everybody with the speed. more →

Movie Review: Bowfinger
Rating: It's a Keeper! I have cajoled, lent, and blackmailed many people into watching Bowfinger over the years and I have learned that this is one of those love it or hate it kind of movies. I am definitely in the love it camp. I have never figured out why the people it the hate it camp react so negatively but to me this movie is sheer genius. The story is about Bowfinger (Steve Martin) who is a wannabe movie maker who tries to make an action movie. But there is only one problem. His big name star won't do the movie. So he does it without him knowing. Eddie Murphy plays Kit Ramsey, the biggest black star in the world. He also plays his brother. Of course Eddie plays multiple characters in many movies, but in this one he does it without make-up and he does it very well. Heather Graham, in all her Heather Grahamy goodness, is great as a fresh off the bus actress who gives herself a whole week to succeed in Hollywood. She works her way through the entire movie company to gain screen time. I love movies like this where the more I see it the more littl efunny details I see. That is one of the things that makes a movie worht owning. Also if it was one that didn't do great at the box office you can suprise your guest with it. Now I might have put you off by saying this is a love it or hate it movie. But believe me if you are in the love it side you will be glad you saw it. If you hate it I can only say don't be a hater. Murphy and Martin at the top of their game. Give it a try and see for yourself. This movie is #10 on my All-Time Best Comedy list. more →

Movie Review: Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles
Rating: Keeper This is exactly the type of movie to add to your home theater collection. Something a guest will not have seen but which you would like to see again. This movie really got to me. It did it in ways I would not have expected. It didn't have the usual overly predictable Hollywood touhing moment at the end to make you cry. It got me early and often.

It might be hard to describe the plot, but it is about an estranged father who wants to make peace with his dieing son. He tries to pick up where his son left off and film a Chinese folk opera. {don't worry it all makes sense in the movie and it makes no sense} It is just a father desparately trying to make a gesture to fix past mistakes that really can't be fixed.

Movie Rating System: I explain my rating scheme
So my rating system is all about building a good home theater DVD collection and always having some interesting titles to watch when you have guests. I really like to watch movies with my other people. I really enjoy discussing the movies afterwards and that helps me to lock in what I liked or didn't like about each movie. more →

Movie Review: Alien Vs. Predator (AVP)
Rating: Buy it Used

OK I might have violated my sequel rule by watching this movie but I had already bought it used and it was in my collection. So when a friend came over and we were looking for a "guy movie" we picked this one. Beside since I did own it how could I not watch it that puts the sequel rule in conflict with the Cheap Dave rule. I will have to start enforcing the sequel rule at the DVD store. more →

Movie Review: Blow Dry

This is a touching Britcom about an unlikely subject. A hair styling contest. more →

Movie Review: Clockwise
Rating: It's a Keeper!!

This is a great one for a home collection. There is a good chance your movie guests haven't seen it and it is unpredictable enough that you won't get tired of watching it. That is why it gets my highest rating "Keeper". more →

Movie Review: Coffee and Cigarettes

Movie Review: Galaxy Quest
Rating: It's a Keeper!

Ok I am officially moving this up my list of comedies and sci-fi movies. I have seen it many times but mostly on free TV. We had a large group and really had a wide range of ages. Young kids (9 and 11), a teenager (15) and several adults. Some had seen the movie but most had not. I have to say this one one of the best HT experiences we have had yet. It was a rollicking good time. more →

Movie Review: Hercules Returns
Rating: It's a Keeper! (if you can find it) I saw this movie years ago in the Seattle International Film Festival. We liked it so much we watched it twice. more →

Movie Review: Hoodwinked
Rating: Buy it used

This is another of those movies that is great for the whole family. It is an animated movie with a slightly more edgy attitude (but not so much that even little kids couldn't watch it). It just takes a standard fairy tale like Little Red Riding Hood and gives it the Usual Suspect treatment. more →

Movie Review: How To Get Ahead In Advertising
Rating: It's a keeper!!

My goal in doing reviews is to help my reader (someday I hope is is readers) to find some movies they might otherwise not stumble across. They don't get much more obscure than this. more →

Movie Review: The Chronicles of Riddick
Rating: Netflix

If you like Pitch Black and you like Vin Diesel. Then you might like the chronicles of Riddick. Of you didn't you might not find a lot to like in this movie. more →

Movie Review: The Girl In The Cafe
Rating: Buy It Used

This movie has a lot of the attributes of a movie I like in my collection. It is a small movie without big stars and there is a good chance that guests wouldn't have seen it. It has a quirky feel to it as an unlikely romance slowly develops. more →

Movie Review: The Magnificent Seven
Rating: It's a Keeper!

Ok I will admit it. I have never seen the Magnificent Seven. But one of the great things about a home theater is being able to watch classic movies on the big screen. more →

Movie Review: The Secret of Roan Inish
Rating: It's a Keeper!! Here is a great movie to add to your collection. Particularly if you have older children who have seen every animated movie but you don't want to show them PG-13 movies. This is one of the few movies that you can say "great for the whole family" and mean it. more →

Movie Review: The Weatherman
Rating: Netflix

This movie is a hard movie to categorize. It isn't really a comedy, although there are some funny parts. Most of the humor though is of the uncomfortable kind. more →

Movie Review: The Whole Ten Yards
Rating: Dentist Chair! Ok here is a sequels to a movie that I generally liked that has caused me to develop a new rule on sequels. The rule is unless the word of mouth on the sequel is super strong (like it is way better than the original), I am not going to watch it. more →

Movie Review: Hotel Rwanda
Rating: It's a rental This movie should be a required history lesson. The events portrayed took place in 1994 but already I think it is fading from public memory. I watched this movie with a friend while my wife was out of town since I was pretty sure she wouldn't like it. more →

Movie Review: Strange Brew
Rating: It's a Keeper!

This movie will be on a lot of my lists. I have it as my top sci-fi/action movie and I also talk about it for use as a great demo movie for you home theater. So I thought I would make it one of my first reviews. more →
