Movie Review: Bagdad Cafe

Rating: It's a Keeper!!

When you have a home theater you are always looking for more good movies to watch. So in my reviews I am going to concentrate on obscure or over-looked movies that I think people might not have seen. Bagdad Cafe always come to mind when I think of that type of movie.

Bagdad Cafe (1987 AKA Outside of Rosenheim) is a German production made in the U.S. I am always interested in this type of movie because the view of the U.S. as portrayed by a foreigner is always a little different than we normally see ourselves.

The movie is set in the Nevada desert somewhere on the way to or from Las Vegas. Basically it is a rundown truck stop.

This movie really sticks with you and is unique from anything that comes out of Hollywood. One thing that I have heard other people say about it is that is is one of the only movies I have ever seen that portrays a heavy woman as attractive (Marianne Sagebrecht). In fact she become more attractive as you watch the movie. This isn't the simple hollywood trick of taking a pretty girl and putting glasses on her aqnd her hair in a bun. You come to see her through the eyes of a burned out Hollywood western star who paints her (Jack Palance). Each picture becomes more intimate as they trust each other more.

CCH Pounder also turns in a nice performance as the owner of the truck stop. One of the other key aspects of the movie is that one of the main characters is a black woman but the movie isn't about her being black or a woman. She is just a person doing the best she can with what she has.

This is not a big action movie with a lot of special effects but there is a scene where a truck pulls into the station that will almost make you duck to get out of the way.

If you haven't seen this movie put it on your list.
