Danny Deckchair is an Australian comedy where the main character (Rhys Ifans) ties a bunch of helium balloons to his lawn chair and escapes his life in the city.

The story isn't really about him in his make-shift aircraft it just acts as a Deus ex machina* to transport our hero from one location and life and literally drop him from the heavens into a completely different life. All Danny really wants is a vacation and in the end he gets it.

I liked the movie. We chose it because we like Australian movies. We used IMDB and starting with one movie we liked (Love Serenade) we followed the lead actress (Miranda Otto) and found this movie. We have intentionally sought out several of her movies, (Flight of the Phoenix, War of the Worlds, not to mention LOTR). It looks like her career is really taking off. Rhys Ifans was also in Janice Beard 45 WPM, another movie I really liked and will be reviewing soon. He has the ability to play a geeky guy and then pull off the transformation to the handsome man. Kind of a male version of the ugly/pretty girl. He is good in this movie as the trapped bloke looking to add some adventure to his life.

The Aussie movies seem to have a light tone. They don't take themselves too seriously. They have quirky characters and story lines that aren't quite as linear as many Hollywood movies.

So I will give this movie my second highest rating. I liked it and will keep it in my collection but for my readers I will say that it is worth a look.

*See Mr. Robertson I wasn't asleep in World Cultures class.
