Movie Review: Galaxy Quest

Rating: It's a Keeper!

Ok I am officially moving this up my list of comedies and sci-fi movies. I have seen it many times but mostly on free TV. We had a large group and really had a wide range of ages. Young kids (9 and 11), a teenager (15) and several adults. Some had seen the movie but most had not. I have to say this one one of the best HT experiences we have had yet. It was a rollicking good time.

I think most people who will read this site are familiar with the movie so I will just do a very short summary. It is basically a spoof of the original Star Trek TV series and the Trekky phenomenon. But with my varied audience much of the spoof aspect was lost. The young ones didn't know about the Trekkies or the classic overacting of William Shatner. It all didn't really matter. the story stands on its own both as a comedy and as a sci-fi movie.

Great performances by the whole cast. Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Allen Rickman and Tony Shalhoub to name a few. And who could forget the unforgettable, forgotten crew member played by Sam Rockwell who plays crewmen number six in one episode. He was killed before the first commercial. So he just wants to be involved with the cast members in anyway. But when the adventure starts he is hoping his short ride on the TV spaceship isn't replayed in real life.

I tell you everyone in my audience of 8 found something to like about this movie. There was laughter, surprise and delight and even applause when the credits rolled.

So this is a movie that could have just been a weak "High Concept" movie. But the writing, casting and concept really pull it together to make it an overall great movie. The exact kind of movie that you want in your collection and you will be hoping your guests select it.
