Cheap Dave's Home Theater

Movie Review: Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles

Rating: Keeper

This is exactly the type of movie to add to your home theater collection. Something a guest will not have seen but which you would like to see again.

This movie really got to me. It did it in ways I would not have expected. It didn't have the usual overly predictable Hollywood touhing moment at the end to make you cry. It got me early and often.

It might be hard to describe the plot, but it is about an estranged father who wants to make peace with his dieing son. He tries to pick up where his son left off and film a Chinese folk opera. {don't worry it all makes sense in the movie and it makes no sense} It is just a father desparately trying to make a gesture to fix past mistakes that really can't be fixed.

But the journey he makes and the transformation from his quest to patch his realtionship with his son to one where he tries to create a realationship with a Chinese actor and his son is what this movie is about.

In the end it all worked and I really enjoyed this movie. I have seen a lot of good foreign movies lately. Man if you just watch the best movie from India, China, Japan etc in a year you really are way ahead from the old days when someone dragged you to what was supposed to be a great French film and at the end you were scratching your head, saying "What happened".

Take a chance and read some sub-titles. You may be missing some great movies.
