Movie Review: Strange Brew

Rating: It's a Keeper!

Ok this one goes back a ways (1984) but a good DVD collection has to have some gems from the past. I hadn't seen this movie in a long time and usually it has been on TV.

Ok this one goes back a ways (1984) but a good DVD collection has to have some gems from the past. I hadn't seen this movie in a long time and usually it has been on TV.

We pulled this out recently when we had our godsons over (7 & 13). They are at an age that they are getting tired of watching the latest computer animated movies. So this was a title they had no idea about. I had to mentally review the movie to think if there was anything inappropriate for their age. Luckily there wasn't.

So a brief summary. Bob and Doug MacKenzie (Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas) are two Canadians whose life revolves around beer, doughnuts and back bacon. They try to get some free beer with the old "mouse in the beer bottle" trick and end up with jobs at the brewery. This leads them into a plot by a mad brewmeister (Max Von Sydow) to take over the world by putting a mind control drug in the beer. Ok not the most plausible plot but somehow it all works.

Now for those of you who aren't old enough to remember this all started as a sketch on Second City TV. The show that gave us John Candy and a host of funny Canucks. They got very popular in the early '80s and had a great comedy album and half the country was repeating their many catch phrases, like "take-off you hosehead". So there are a lot of references that might be lost on a younger viewer. But in the end it didn't really matter. The movie stands on it's own.

Overall it is just a silly fun movie and sometimes that is what you want. So if you haven't taken a trip to the Great White North in a while do yourelf a favor and take off eh.
