Movie Review: The Weatherman

Rating: Netflix

This movie is a hard movie to categorize. It isn't really a comedy, although there are some funny parts. Most of the humor though is of the uncomfortable kind.

This movie is a hard movie to categorize. It isn't really a comedy, although there are some funny parts. Most of the humor though is of the uncomfortable kind.

Nicholas Cage is very good as usual. He is not for making the safe choices or getting type cast. But in this case it is such an everyman, regular guy character that it ends up feeling like there is no character at all.

His life is mundane. He has a job he doesn't really understand. He performs the weather more than he predicts it. He isn't trained in meteorology he just plays one on TV.

This movie is actually more complex than it seems at first. The weatherman is trying to stay relevant in the life of his kids while hoping to renew his relationship with his ex-wife. But the viewer knows before he does that it is hopeless.

The down side of this movie is an overall dark tone. It seems pretty bleak and doesn't give much hoppe at the end. But it is more honest to real life than most movies.

I think it is the kind of movie that you think about days after. So I can't really recommend you rush out to see it but I wouldn't steer you away form it either. That is why it is a good Netflix choice. Get it and see for yourself.
